PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method of capturing gaseous, granular, and liquid radioactive material coming out of a primary reactor containment vessel of a light water reactor (LWR) in a severe accident state.SOLUTION: A system includes an underground medium region 4 that is connected to a part of a reactor pressure vessel 2 and a primary reactor containment vessel 3, and adsorbs and absorbs various level of radioactive material. This medium region 4 is located on-site, and provides a passive self-regulating structure for stabilizing a nuclear reactor. The capture system provides liquid drainage and gas ventilation of the radioactive material, and processing that can process a medium following stabilization of the reactor.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
