PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel azo-based dichroic dye having improved solubility with a host liquid crystal while maintaining a high order parameter (S value), and a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal element or the like capable of achieving high-contrast display.SOLUTION: The azo-based dichroic dye is represented by general formula (I) below. In the formula, Arand Areach independently represent a 1,4-phenylene group which may have a substituent or a 1,4-naphthylene group which may have a substituent, however, at least one Aris a 1,4-phenylene group having a substituent; and the substituent is a linear or branched alkyl group or alkoxy group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, substituting at two positions which are second and third positions, fifth and sixth positions, second and fifth positions, or third and sixth positions, and these substituents may be connected to form a ring.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
