PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To classify attributes of manuscripts (e.g., character-only manuscript,/newspaper manuscript/thin manuscript/other manuscripts) in simple configuration using the same discrimination system.SOLUTION: A manuscript type recognition device comprises: an image region separation part 21 for outputting a signal indicating each region separating a character region and a pattern region of an input image; a smoothing part which applies smoothing processing for removing dots as many as or more than a specific number of lines in the pattern region of the input image; an edge emphasis part for outputting an image in which edge emphasis processing corresponding to an edge amount is applied to an edge part of the character region in the input image to which the smoothing processing is applied; a histogram creation part for creating a histogram relating to the image to which the edge emphasis processing is applied; and a manuscript type recognition part 51 for recognizing a manuscript type relating to the input image by utilizing the histogram.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
