PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for detecting and avoiding a pedestrian.SOLUTION: A method of controlling a vehicle comprises: detecting an object proximate to the vehicle with at least one sensor; analyzing data from the sensor with a controller to determine whether the detected object is a pedestrian proximate to the vehicle; determining maximum separation distance from the pedestrian while maintaining the vehicle within a current lane of travel; determining maximum safe speed for the vehicle to pass the pedestrian on the basis of the available maximum separation distance; and performing a pedestrian safety zone maintenance operation including at least one of steering the vehicle to the maximum separation distance and braking the vehicle to the maximum safe speed while the vehicle is passing the pedestrian.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
