The present invention provides a method for determining whether a patient is likely to benefit from cancer treatment by measuring whether the patient has an intestinal microbiota imbalance with an over-appearance of a particular bacterial species. The invention also provides probiotic strains for improving the effectiveness of cancer treatment, particularly chemotherapy, in patients in need of treatment.
