The invention relates to a method for separating a hydrocarbon mixture (C), at least partially, obtained by steam cracking (10), which contains at least hydrocarbons containing one, two and three carbon atoms, including ethane and ethylene; the first fraction (C2 +, C2-) is first obtained from the hydrocarbon mixture (C), at least partially separating other components, where the majority of this fraction consists of hydrocarbons comprising two or more carbon atoms originally contained in the hydrocarbon mixture (C) or the predominant part of this fraction consists of hydrocarbons comprising two or less carbon atoms originally contained in the hydrocarbon mixture (C), and additional fractions (C1, C2, CH, C3 +, CH) are then obtained from the first fraction (C2 +, C2- ). The fraction (R, S) containing ethane is separated in parallel with or downstream of at least partially separating the other components from the hydrocarbon mixture (C) in an amount that reduces the content of ethane in the first fraction (C2 +, C2-) level less than 25%, and the fraction (R, S) containing ethane, includes a small amount or does not include other hydrocarbons containing two carbon atoms. The present invention further relates to a separation system (30), to a corresponding steam cracking system, and to a method for upgrading a steam cracking system.
