The present disclosure is related to a new powders by infiltration sintering route, which has been named as CAIS (Current Assisted Infiltration Sintering). CAIS is suitable for developing composite materials with infiltrated and/or interpenetrated ceramic metal network systems. Virtually any type of reticular form, whether ceramic or metallic; for example, with honeycomb, square, triangular, cylindrical, geometries, etc. can be embedded or infiltrated, either by a pure metal or an alloy, or even a composite ceramic matrix. CAIS essentially consists of two experimental steps; a precompacted material (raw or heat treated pellets) and arranged in the form of a frame or base network (ceramic or metallic) on a three-dimensional way; placed on the bottom of a graphite dice matrix, leaving free space, which eventually will be filled with another material (ceramic or metallic) energized to three quarteers of its melting and/or partially molten temperature. CAIS is performed under vacuum condi tions in an electric furnace (SPS-Type), while the axial pressure control and direct current application is pulsed. A wide range of advanced materials can be prepared by CAIS, such as bioreabsorbable biomaterials, gas sensors, electro-ceramic or other multifunctional materials.
