The present invention relates to a method for the green synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles using extracts from the Mimosa Tenuiflora plant as biological and reducing means, which further exhibit catalytic and microbicide activity. The method comprises obtaining an ethanol extract from the bark of the tree for use as a reducing agent in the production of nanoparticles. In the case of gold nanoparticles, tetra-chloroauric acid is used as a metal precursor. And silver nitrate is used for the silver nanoparticles. In both cases, it employs water as the solvent; the reactants are mixed in the precursor solvent reducing order and adding the new component to be homogenized. The mixture obtained is held at room temperature for 24 hours to complete the synthesis reaction. The nanoparticles obtained, both of gold and silver are usable in a method of photocatalytic degradation of contaminating dyes, such as methylene blue, either in solution or deposited on a substrate.
