A system for early error detection in a drive system of a wind turbine generator is provided. The system includes a first rotation sensor coupled to an input shaft of a drive gear or transmission stage. This first sensor captures the rotational input angle. The system also includes a second rotation sensor coupled to the output shaft of the drive gear or transmission. The output angle obtained by the second sensor represents the output of the drive unit or the speed change stage performed in response to the input angle. The system also includes a control unit configured to simultaneously capture first and second time dependent signals indicative of an input angle and an output angle, respectively. The control unit is configured to determine a time-dependent angle difference from the first and second signals in consideration of the gear ratio of the drive gear or the speed change stage. Further, the control unit analyzes this time-dependent angle difference to perform early error detection in the drive system.
