A method for recognizing a private network and an apparatus thereof are disclosed. A terminal attempts communication connection using a router candidate IP address selected in a private IP band pool including at least one IP address band information, confirms whether there exists a response within a predetermined response time, and recognizing an IP address band including a corresponding router candidate IP address as an address band of a private network that a router uses if there exists a response.
