A system for securely authenticating software application program interfaces (APIs) includes a handshake protocol that is provided to verify that the parties involved are licensed to use the system including rights to intellectual property (IP) . A handshake is a challenge-response protocol that involves several steps. First, the requestor sends a request to the resolver requesting access to the function via the API. The verifier responds to the request by outputting a challenge sent to the claimant. The challenge is also held by the resolver and used in his internal calculations to confirm the claimant's response. The claimant then processes the challenge using components conforming to a known license as hook IP and issues a response to the resolver. The verifier will likely compare the correct candidate response from the claimant with the target response known to be correct, and if a match occurs, the verifier will allow the claimant to access the API.
