PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a reduction in focus detection accuracy due to a pair of subject images being shifted in a direction orthogonal to a correlation direction.;SOLUTION: A focus detection device detects a focus state of an imaging optical system 100 by photoelectrically converting a pair of subject images formed by a focus detection optical system 303 dividing a light beam, with a focus detection element 304 including a plurality of photoelectric conversion parts that is two-dimensionally arranged in a first direction and a second direction orthogonal to each other. Signal creation means 210 creates a pair of phase difference image signals by using an output from the focus detection element. Calculation means 210 calculates a phase difference in the first direction of the pair of phase difference image signals to acquire a focus state from the phase difference.
