PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a short pulse laser having no pulse tail, by which a sufficient energy exceeding 10 mJ as an irradiation energy of a peak pulse can be obtained.SOLUTION: A carbon dioxide gas laser excitation medium gas comprises a carbon dioxide gas, nitrogen and helium, which are mixed in the proportion below on a volume basis: Carbon dioxide gas:Nitrogen:helium=20:1:5-40. In the carbon dioxide gas laser excitation medium gas, the nitrogen is mixed in a range from more than 0 to less than 5.9% with respect to 2.4% in its partial pressure (concentration). The carbon dioxide gas laser excitation medium gas enables the generation of a short pulse laser of 10 mJ or more in peak pulse irradiation energy with no pulse tail.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
