A monitoring system (10) for detecting an error of a harmonic filter (100) in a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system is disclosed. The monitoring system comprises a harmonic filter (100) comprising one or more capacitor units, a monitoring sensor unit (200) sensing a voltage of at least one of the one or more capacitor units, and, a control unit (300) monitoring a voltage error of the at least one capacitor unit using the sensing result. The control unit (300) monitors the voltage error by comparing a reference voltage value of the first capacitor unit (111) with its actual voltage value or by using the voltage imbalance between the first capacitor unit (111) and at least one capacitor unit excluding the first capacitor unit (111) among the one or more capacitor units.
