A two-step approach for image segmentation in the treatment planning process is disclosed. In the first step, an automatic segmentation method is used to create a first provisional segmentation. The first provisional segmentation is created using a fast but inaccurate segmentation method. The first provisional segmentation may be used to create an initial treatment plan for approval. Once the initial treatment plan is approved, a more powerful second image segmentation is performed. The second segmentation is used for the design of patient specific equipment used to provide patient specific medical care.
