PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method capable of doping carbon nanotube effectively with nitrogen, and to provide an air electrode that can bring about a significantly high open circuit voltage (OCV) in a metal air battery, without using a precious metal catalyst such as platinum.SOLUTION: In an air electrode containing carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen, the open circuit voltage (OCV) is 1.30 V or more, when evaluated in the configuration of a zinc air battery using a zinc electrode as a metal negative electrode. The carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen can be produced by processing the carbon nano tubes by using at least one kind of nitrogen-containing compound selected from a group of cyanamide, dicyandiamide, guanidine, and their derivatives and salts, thereby introducing nitrogen to the carbon nanotubes.
