The present invention relates to a method of induced cell death via ferroptosis by ingestion of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the present invention describes the administration of high concentrations of ultra-small nanoparticles several times during the course of treatment in combination with a nutrient-depleted environment, thereby modulating cellular metabolic pathways to induce cell death by the ferroptosis mechanism. Iron deficiency involves iron, reactive oxygen species, and a synchronous mode of execution of cell death.
