A system and a method for image based indoor localization and navigation are provided. The method includes receiving media content containing a plurality of frames captured in at least one orientation of the media content generator. Distance between each of the plurality of key points associated with the current frame and each of the plurality of key points associated with a subsequent frame is calculated to determine a change in the distance of each key point from the center point of the current frame and the subsequent frame. A topological map based on the change in the distance of the each key point and the orientation of the current frame is generated. Loop closure for the current frame is detected to generate a navigation map corresponding to topological map by identifying the current frame as a previously identified landmark in an environment based on the loop closure detection.
