The present invention discloses biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticle system (NPs) for the targeted delivery of theranostic agents for biomedical application. Particularly, the present invention provides a green chemistry based approach for the synthesis of well-structured biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) for diagnostics and therapeutic applications with no tissue toxicity. The governing principle for the nanoparticle synthesis is self-assembly to minimize the free energy of the polymer in the presence of salts. Diagnostic and therapeutic agents are being encapsulated during formation of the nanoparticles.
