This invention shows a new approach of measuring weight using electro¬magnetic levitation[1]. Unlike conventional weight measuring techniques[2], which commonly uses a strain gauge[2], our setup uses an electromagnet[3]which generates the necessary magnetic force to balance the weight of the object (in this case a metallic object e.g. an iron nut bolt for demonstration) to be weighed and hence levitating it. The setup consists of a circuit[4] which automatically generates the required current in the electromagnet to keep a range of weights levitating at a fixed position. The currents corresponding to a range of standard weights is then used to obtain a linear current vs weight plot for calibration with calibration constant being slope of the plot. Unlike conventional weighing devices our setup could potentially eliminate mainly two problems namely, errors due to temperature fluctuations and corner load. A plausible area of application could be in pharmaceutics where mainly class 3 prescription balance[5] is used.
