The present disclosure is related to the catalytic process that includes catalytic compositions for the depolymerization and deoxygenation of lignins contained in the biomass for the production of aromatic hydrocarbons. The catalytic composition consists of at least one non-noble element of the VIIIB group of the periodic table supported on a mesoporous matrix composed of an inorganic oxide, which can be superficially modified alumina with a second inorganic oxide in order to inhibit the interaction between the active component and the support. The lignin depolymerization process consists of dissolving lignin in a mixture of protic liquids, making the same react in a batch reaction system or in a continuous flow in an inert and/or reducing atmosphere, at a temperature of between 60 and up to 320°C and a pressure of 5 and up to 90 Kg/cm2.
