The invention relates to an instrument (1) for the apical preparation of a root canal, the instrument comprising: a handle (30); a substantially conical head (10) having a cone point (11) and a cone base (12) at a distance therefrom; and a shank (20) which connects the handle (30) and the head (10). According to the invention, the shank (20) is tapered in relation to the cone base (12). The diameter at the cone point is between 0.25 mm and 0.8 mm and the taper of the conical head (10) is between 8 and 12 %. The instrument according to the invention allows a collection zone to be simply produced at the root tip of the root canal.
