A monetary exchange device (1) is provided with: a deposit unit (21) configured such that money of a currency to be exchanged is inserted therein; an identification unit (26) configured so as to identify the denomination of inserted money; a currency exchange processing unit (overall control unit 11) configured so as to calculate a payout amount of a currency to be dispensed in accordance with the identification results and the exchange rate between the currency to be exchanged and the currency to be dispensed; and a dispensing unit (22) configured so as to dispense money therefrom according to the calculated payout amount. The identification unit is configured so as to identify medium conditions pertaining to the medium of inserted money, and the currency exchange processing unit is configured so as to alter the exchange rate in accordance with the medium conditions when calculating the payout amount.
