The present invention relates to a metal porous body-coated nickel based catalyst for SMR reaction with improved catalyst adhesion properties and reaction characteristics, and a preparation method and a use thereof. Specifically, the present invention provides the preparation method of the metal porous body-coated nickel based catalyst, the preparation method comprising: a first step of preparing nickel-containing composite particles in which a metal active component is supported on a ceramic support; a second step of mixing the nickel-containing composite particles with an inorganic binder to obtain a mixture, and milling the mixture to prepare a nickel-based catalyst slurry; and a third step of pre-treating a surface of a metal porous body such that an Al_2O_3 oxide film is formed on the surface of the metal porous body or is formed in a later step; and a fourth step of dip coating the pre-treated metal porous body with the nickel-based catalyst slurry and drying and firing the pre-treated metal porous body coated with the nickel-based catalyst slurry to prepare a nickel-based catalyst in which a nickel-containing composite is supported on the metal porous body having the Al_2O_3 oxide film formed on the surface thereof. The preparation method according to the present invention can maintain adhesion properties and reactivity of the metal porous body-coated catalyst even after the metal porous body-coated catalyst has been used in a steam reforming reaction of methane by pre-treating the metal porous body.
