Biometric registration and verification techniques for the ocular-blood vessel, peri-eye, and facial regions are described. The perineural image regions may be defined based on the dimensions of the eye region identified in the image of the face region. Using the combination of the patterned histogram feature descriptors, feature descriptors for the points of interest in the ocular and ocular regions may be generated. Based on the area value scores calculated based on the texture surrounding the points of interest, quality metrics for the areas can be determined. The biometric matching process for calculating a match score based on the ocular and ocular peripheral regions may progressively include additional ocular peripheral regions to obtain greater match reliability.
