The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for fault distinction with which fault distinction calculation using only the current measuring equipment installed in a substation, parallel division, and a feeding division included in an electric railway power supply system can be accurately performed and expedited. The fault distinction apparatus according to the present invention includes a sensor unit outputting current data by sensing current the electric line and feeder line of up and down lines; a data storage unit storing equations for fault point determination and fault distinction calculation; a fault determination unit determining whether the fault point is a substation-parallel division section or a parallel division-feeding division section by means of the current data value output from the sensor unit and substitution in the equation for fault point determination; a fault distinction unit calculating the fault point as the distance ratio to the substation-fault with respect to the substation-parallel division distance or the distance ratio to the parallel division-fault with respect to the parallel division-feeding division distance by means of the current data value output from the sensor unit and substitution in the equation for fault point calculation; and a breaker control unit outputting a control signal to the breaker so that the lane determined to be faulty based on the distance ratio by the fault distinction unit is isolated.
