Provided is a modified polyvinyl alcohol capable of producing polyvinyl acetal which hardly causes reaction inhibition, coloring and coarsening of particles and has a low polymerization degree and is excellent in solubility in solvents, and a process for producing the modified polyvinyl alcohol. In addition, there is provided a modified polyvinyl acetal having a low degree of polymerization and excellent solubility in a solvent and having high elasticity, mechanical strength and membrane composition. Also disclosed are a process for producing the modified polyvinyl acetal and a process for producing a polyvinyl acetal film, a polyvinyl acetal film, a method for producing a ceramic slurry composition, and a ceramic green sheet using the modified polyvinyl acetal. Characterized by having at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, an aldehyde group, a carboxyl group and a lactone ring group at the molecular end and having a saponification degree of 99.95 mol% or more and a 1,2-glycol bond content of 1.4 mol% Modified polyvinyl alcohol.
