FIELD: forestry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to forestry and bioindication, in particular to the estimation of the content of elements of a group of heavy metals in atmospheric air in terms of their accumulation by thalli of epiphytic lichens. In the method, epiphytic lichens are used as a bioindicator, performing the functions of the absorbing surface, sampled on trial plots. In this case, epiphytic, widespread (eurytopic, background) lichen species are used Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr., Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach., Usnea hirta (L.) Weber ex F.H. Wigg., selected in the reference points, the collection area is not less than 10×10 m, packed in paper bags and transported to a laboratory where the samples taken are cleaned of inclusions, bark, dried, prepared for analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Based on the results of this analysis, a conclusion is made about the contamination of atmospheric air by heavy metals (Sr, As, Cu, Ni, Co, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn) by comparing the concentration of heavy metals in the lichen samples collected in the study area against samples of epiphytic lichens selected in the background area (with known contamination).;EFFECT: method provides simplification of the method, reduction of labour-consuming operations and application of available bioindicators.;1 cl, 3 dwg, 1 ex
