A steer-by-wire steering system includes a steering wheel selectively coupled to a steering shaft, wherein the steering wheel and the steering shaft are axially movable between an extended position and a retracted position; an advanced driver assistance system configured to steer the steerable wheels of a vehicle that is in communication with the steering wheel and the steering shaft, the ADAS configured to steer the steerable wheels in an autonomous driving mode and in a mode to selectively control with manual driving; and a steering system controller in communication with the ADAS, wherein the steering system controller is programmed to operate in response to a request from a vehicle operator to deactivate a portion of the ADAS and switch from the autonomous driving mode to the manual driving mode while the steering wheel in FIG the retracted position is to move the steering wheel in the extended position, and to operatively couple the steering wheel with the steering shaft.
