The present invention relates to a method of estimation of the characteristics of the biodegradation of a substrate by anaerobic digestion in a methanizer which comprises at least the following steps: a) on the basis of spectral data of a sample of the substrate, the predicted with a prediction model at least the characteristics of this substrate: - the potential biochemical methane (abbreviated to "bmp ") of said substrate, - the time necessary for the production of methane, expressed in percentage of bmp of the substrate; b) it implements a mathematical model of the anaerobic digestion on the basis of the characteristics of the said substrate in step a) so as to determine an estimate of the characteristics of the biodegradation.
