This sensor (50) for determining the overall content of a predetermined chemical element, in particular iron, of a liquid body. This sensor uses X-ray fluorescence technology and comprises an X-ray source (502), an X-ray detector (504) and a cell (506) for containing a sample of lubricant to be analyzed and equipped with a wall (510). ) forming an X-ray window. The wall is made of poly (ethylene terephthalate). In addition, the cell includes a housing (508) defining an internal volume for receiving the sample. The method of calibrating the sensor (50) comprises at least the following steps of establishing a first secondary X-ray spectrum comprising energy levels corresponding to the components of the housing material; operating the sensor (50), while the internal volume of the housing does not contain a sample of the liquid body and establishing a second secondary X-ray spectrum; modifying the second spectrum by using the first spectrum as the base spectrum to align the outstanding energy levels of the second spectrum with those of the first spectrum and record the modified second spectrum as the reference spectrum for the sensor.
