The invention relates to a method and a device for calibrating an oxygen sensor (16) installed on an internal combustion engine (10), said oxygen sensor (16) being intended to provide a signal, which is a factor the oxygen concentration of the exhaust gases and a stored proportionality coefficient, said method comprising the following steps: a) a signal value provided by said oxygen sensor (16) is recorded when it is immersed in a environment of a known oxygen concentration, to be able to evaluate a coefficient of proportionality; (b) comparing the estimated coefficient of proportionality and the stored proportionality factor; and (c) the assessed proportionality factor is substituted for the stored proportionality factor if the estimated proportionality coefficient is different from the stored proportionality coefficient. In step a), said signal value representative of the known oxygen concentration is recorded before the start of said internal combustion engine (16).
