Process allowing, under the control of one or more trusted migration servers, a copy or a backup of the operational data contained in a source secure element into a recipient secure element where, at any time, at most, one and only one secure element holding the content of the source secure element can be operational at a given time. The process allows to perform: - either a copy of the operational data contained in a source secure element into a recipient secure element, and then, without powering off the two secure elements to continue immediately, in a synchronous mode, with a transition into a non-operational state of the source secure element followed by a transition into an operational state of the recipient secure element, or - a backup of the operational data of a source secure element into one or more recipient secure elements, and then, after powering off the two secure elements, to continue later on, in an asynchronous mode, with a transition into an operational state of one, and only one, of these recipient secure elements by making sure that the source secure element is no more operational.
