To provide an activated carbon suitable for methane occlusion and a method for producing the same, and a methane occlusion material using the activated carbon and a methane occlusion method using the activated carbon.SOLUTION: In an activated carbon, a pore volume (cm/cm) per volume having a pore diameter of 0.72 nm or less determined from a product of a filling density (g/cm) in activated carbon filling and a pore volume (cm/g) having a pore diameter of 0.72 nm or less is 0.2 cm/cmor more, and a pore volume ratio of the pore volume (cm/g) having the pore diameter of 0.72 nm or less to the total pore volume (cm/g) is 50% or more (excluding granulation type spherical phenol resin).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
