PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear motion damper of variable retention property, capable of exhibiting high retention force.;SOLUTION: A linear motion damper of high retention property comprises: a cylindrical cylinder; a columnar bobbin arranged so as to separate from an inner peripheral surface of the cylinder at a radial interval, and arranged in the cylinder so as to be movable in an axis direction; a rod connected to an axial end part of the bobbin from the outside; an energization member configured to energize the bobbin in the axis direction; magnetic viscous fluid with which the cylinder is filled; and an electromagnetic induction coil wound on an outer peripheral surface of the bobbin.
