To provide a gear device for a railroad vehicle capable of making a lubrication performance during low-speed operation compatible with suppression of stirring heat during high-speed rotation even in the case of forward rotation and backward rotation.SOLUTION: A gear device 1 for a railroad vehicle comprises: a large gear 10 which is connected to an axle 11; a small gear 20 which is connected to a drive shaft 21 and meshed to the large gear 10; a case 2 in which the large gear 10 and the small gear 20 are accommodated and a lubricant 4 is stored on a bottom; and oil reservoirs (a first pocket 30 and a second pocket 40) that are formed at positions higher than a rotary shaft of the large gear 10 and a rotary shaft of the small gear 20 inside of the case 2. The oil reservoirs include first openings 31 and 41 and second openings 32 and 42 which are formed oppositely in a circumferential direction of the large gear 10. The first openings 31 and 41 and the second openings 32 and 42 are formed in such a manner that apertures cross a tangent line of the large gear 10.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
