To provide a method for producing transition metal hydroxide particles for use in producing a lithium transition metal composite oxide which is a lithium-excess active material having a high sphericity and a high apparent density; a method for producing the lithium transition metal composite oxide, and to provide lithium transition metal hydroxide particles which are advantageous for handling in producing the lithium transition metal composite oxide.SOLUTION: Provided is a method for producing transition metal hydroxide particles for use in producing a lithium transition metal composite oxide that has α-NaFeO-type crystalline structure, comprises Mn and at least one of Ni and Co as transition metals (Me) and has a molar ratio Li/Me of more than 1 and a molar ratio Mn/Me of more than 0.5 by introducing transition metal carbonate particles into an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide. The transition metal hydroxide particles have a powder press density of more than 2.31 g/cmand a ratio of a tap density to the powder press density that is 0.50 or more. Also provided is a method for producing the lithium transition metal composite oxide by mixing with a lithium compound and calcining.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
