The present disclosure relates to membrane assemblies, electrode assemblies, membrane electrode assemblies, and electrochemical cells and liquid flow batteries made therefrom. The present disclosure further provides a membrane assembly, an electrode assembly, and a method of manufacturing the membrane electrode assembly. The membrane assembly includes an ion permeable membrane and at least one transport protective layer. The electrode assembly includes a porous electrode and a transport protective layer. The membrane electrode assembly includes an ion permeable membrane, at least one transport protective layer, and at least one porous electrode. The transport protective layer includes at least one of a non-conductive woven base material and a non-woven base material containing fibers, and the water permeability @ 5 kPa of the transport protective layer is about 100 mL / (cm 2 min) or more.
