The present invention describes a Montessori shelf and its method of operation for use with the Montessori teaching method for the self-development of children aged 0 to 6 years. Specifically, the present invention comprises a shelf provided with a controller and niches with a color tray, sensor, light emitter, and the controller is programmed such that when a tray of a respective niche is not stored therein, the light emitter remains lit and only goes out when the tray is returned to the correct niche. The present invention is in the fields of pedagogy.
