A projectile comprising a compacted copper powder mixture comprising particles which are physically bonded together to form a cohesive and ductile microstructure is disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for producing a projectile by powder metallurgy techniques which provide sufficient properties to allow the projectile to be loaded into a cartridge and crimped without breaking. These projectiles have sufficient strength to maintain their integrity during firing, but may break apart upon impact and be formulated without lead.
