Topical formulations comprising about 0.001 to about 3% by weight of detomidine or a salt thereof are described herein; and a carrier which is suitable for topical administration to the skin of an individual, the carrier optionally comprising a water miscible solubilizer which is present in an amount of up to 40% by weight of the formulation; wherein the formulation has a pH of 4.5 to 9 and the formulation providing prolonged, substantially non-systemic pain treatment. In addition, methods are provided for providing non-systemic prolonged treatment for pain in an individual in need thereof comprising topical administration to the subject of the topical formulations described in the present invention.
