Method for the preparation of a catalyst suitable for polymerization of an olefin, catalyst and their use, method of producing a supported catalyst for polyethylene synthesis and ethylene polymerization process under suspension conditions in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a catalyst. It is an invention which relates to a method 10 for the preparation of a catalyst suitable for polymerization of an olefin by contacting a magnesium compound with a halogenated group 4 or 5 metal compound. Magnesium is obtained by reacting a solution of an organomagnesium compound 15 with a mixture or silicon compound, characterized in that (a) the solution of organomagnesium compound is obtained by contacting magnesium metal mg with an aromatic halide rx and an ether r0, where r is an aromatic group containing 6 to 20 carbons and x is a halide, and (b) the mixture or silicon compound is the product obtained by mixing or reacting a hydrocarbyl halide silane with an alkoxy group or group aryloxy containing silane compound.
