By means of the method for controlling fatigue crack progression of a metal member, a hole (18) is formed laterally with respect to the cracking direction at a tip (14a) of a fatigue crack (14) in a metal member body (12) in which fatigue cracking has developed under repeated tensile stress, a press fitting (20) that has a greater rigidity than the metal member body (12) and has a larger contour than the hole (18) is press fitted into the hole (18) and compressive stress (C) is applied laterally with respect to the cracking direction to the tip (14a) of the fatigue crack (14).
