The invention relates to a method for detecting an abnormal component type for a technical installation. To provide a method for detecting an abnormal component type, an empirical frequency distribution (4) of a property of multiple components of a component type for a technical installation is used to determine a distribution function (12) which describes said empirical frequency distribution (4), a distribution type of the distribution function (12) being specified. An expected frequency for a specified property range (16) is determined using the distribution function (12). An actual frequency for the specified property range (16), determined using the empirical frequency distribution (4), is then compared with the expected frequency for the specified property range (16), and the comparison is used to detect whether the component type is abnormal.
