The purpose of the present invention is to provide a positive-electrode active material having, as a main component, lithium transition metal composite oxide particles containing Ni and Al, wherein the charge transfer resistance is low, and the battery capacity can be increased. A positive-electrode active material according to the present invention has, as a main component, composite oxide particles containing Ni and Al. The composite oxide particles contain Al in an amount of 5 mol% or more with respect to the total molar quantity of the metal elements excluding Li, and the Al concentration at particle centers is 3 mol% or more. Furthermore, on surfaces of the composite oxide particles or in the vicinity of the surfaces, an Al-rich region, where the Al concentration is 1.3 times or more the Al concentration at the particle centers, is present. In addition, the composite oxide particles contain sulfate ions in an amount of 0.04 mol% or more with respect to the total molar quantity of said particles.
