The invention relates to a method for illuminating a road area by means of a motor vehicle (1), having the steps of: - determining a trajectory which relates to a future movement of the motor vehicle (1) on a road (8), - calculating a light distribution for a headlight (2) of the motor vehicle (1) on the basis of the determined trajectory in such a manner that a course (13) of the trajectory is projected as part of the light distribution onto the road (8), and - emitting a brightness distribution (20) corresponding to the light distribution onto the road (8) by means of the headlight (2). In order to enable an improved overview of the journey of the motor vehicle (1), provision is made for the light distribution to be additionally calculated on the basis of the determined trajectory in such a manner that, in addition to the trajectory, an acceleration of the motor vehicle (1) parallel to the longitudinal direction thereof is also symbolized on the basis of the light distribution.
