The present invention relates to a system and a method for estimating an incident wave and up-and-down motion by measuring the relative wave height of a free running model ship, installing a number of wave measuring sensors around a hull of the free running model ship to measure the real time relative wave height of each point, and able to accurately measure a regular wave pattern and the up-and-down motion of the model ship based on measured values of real-time swing motion and pitch motion through a gyro sensor and then removing the relative wave height from vertical displacement at each point.
