A fire retardant expanded polystyrene foam, according to the present invention, comprises 5 to 38 wt% of sodium hydrogen carbonate, 5 to 30 wt% of expanded graphite, 5 to 38 wt% of borax and 11 to 42 wt% of other inorganic compounds with respect to the total weight. According to the present invention, extinguishment by smothering is carried out from a relatively low temperature at the beginning of fire due to sodium hydrogen carbonate. In addition, due to the use of borax, extinguishment by crystal water occurs at a temperature higher than a contribution temperature of expanded graphite, and since the borax acts as a binder and the shape of the expanded graphite is maintained at a higher temperature than usual, excellent flame retardancy is shown from early stage of fire to a high temperature through the function of the organic temperature range of the sodium hydrogen carbonate, expanded graphite and borax.
