The present invention relates to a walking tracking system in a virtual reality (VR) environment using a roll-based treadmill system, and a method thereof. According to the present invention, the system comprises: VR roll units (40, 50) including communication units (40A, 50A), speed measurement units (40B, 50B), micro brake control units (40C, 50C), and movement recognition units (40D, 50D) to control movement of shoes (10); a server PC (90) including a screen transmission unit (91), a screen rendering unit (92), a gait analysis/recognition unit (93), and a location information reception unit (93) to control an image processing server (60); and a head mounted display (HMD) (30) including an output unit (31), a screen adjustment unit (32), and a screen reception unit (33) to form a VR output display unit. Accordingly, a user puts feet on a bottom part (11) of the left and right shoes (10) to sit on a chair (20) and wears the HMD (30), thereby satisfying the same reality as real walking in a virtual space.
