The present invention relates to compositions, in particular compositions useful for the maintenance and support of healthy microflora in the female genitourinary tract, as well as methods for treating and preventing vaginal infections. Compositions useful for supporting a healthy microflora, as disclosed herein, generally comprise a therapeutic amount of a first therapeutic agent comprising α methyl-D glucoside and a second therapeutic agent comprising a nitrogen containing compound. In some embodiments, the nitrogen containing compound can be, for example, L-cysteine, cytidine, D-asparagine, pyrimidine, D-alanine, D-glucosamine HCL and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine.
